\Waverley and Tower Bridge

All hail. Lord Horatio to the rescue!

I have been working up a sweat with the estate’s tree fellas who have been cutting a chainsaw swathe through the devastation wrought by hurricane Jude, the harbinger of a wild winter. My loyal Spaniel Whimsy has been in the thick of it too, helping me drag battered branches onto the bonfire.

It’s going to be a bumper Guy Fawkes Night and no mistake. I think we will need a cherry picker to put the guy on the top. I am afraid the old apple picking ladder just won’t suffice. While on the subject of raging fires and smoke billowing into the night sky my old friend – a wordsmith of some repute, crackshot cameraman, sports aficionado, popular music expert and general all round good egg – Ian Wylie, has agreed to share his love of all things hot and steamy.

From now on his wonderful photographs of ancient locomotives in a modern setting will be on show in The Gallery https://dawdleandwhimsy.com/about/the-gallery/the-wylie-collection/. I am also hoping he will allow us to show you his superb sunrises, sunsets, landscapes and whimsical observations at some time in the future as well.

His carefully crafted picture of the paddle steamer Waverley passing under Tower Bridge (above) is typical. He has a wonderful eye for a stunning picture. Do have a peek at more of his stolen moments by clicking on The Gallery link above or http://www.ianwyliephoto.com

Unfortunately I must break off now to separate Whimsy from a sizeable sapling that seems reluctant to enter the front door despite his best efforts.

WHIIIIIMSY LEAVE IT!

Katie in the East meets Mae West

Katie in the East meets Mae West

Lord Horatio at your service

I was swept away on a wave of nostalgia when word reached me from the other side of the world. My dear globetrotting friend Katie recently had the good fortune to be messing about on a very big boat indeed- the Queen Mary 2. The news brought memories of my years before the mast flooding back and I was so overcome with emotion I had to reach for the rum ration.

Adventuress, writer, poetess and all round creative legend, Katie has kindly consented to open a porthole onto to her life. Henceforth her occasional musings will occupy Katie’s Corner https://dawdleandwhimsy.com/about/the-library/katies-corner/ in the Dawdle Hall library. On behalf of Lady Dawdle and Whimsy our faithful companion let me issue a warm welcome to a wonderful free spirit, to be enjoyed in large measure.

Katie is currently exploring the southern hemisphere from her base in Australia and has sent us a lovely nautical postcard from on board the Queen Mary. See her “hello” message in The Library and look forward to more from our roving lady of letters.

As they say Down Under “Bonza!”

Lord Horatio calling

Although the expression “strictly for the birds” has often been directed at my more obscure flights of fancy the recent birthday of my cousin John gave new wings to a childhood interest in birds of prey. To wit the noble art of Falconry.   Settle down in the Snug and read about his experiences.   Stories to tell about falconry

Lord Horatio calling

Lady Dawdle has asked me to mention her good friend Kathryn Spencer, the queen of vintage clothing for ladies in sunny Brighton. She is particularly knowledgeable on the subject of classic handbags and how to swing them, in the nicest possible way of course.

Not only is Kathryn fantastic when it comes to fun frocks of yesteryear she has oodles of wit and homespun wisdom to boot. When not encouraging her customers to twirl with vim she can be found on stage doing a quality stand-up turn.

As Lady Dawdle puts it: “Comedy and couture – a winning combination if ever there was one.” See some of Kathryn’s Back To The Couture collection now in The Wardrobe or at https://www.facebook.com/BackToTheCouture?ref=hl
